The NUS Centre for Advanced 2D Materials

Established in 2010 within the National University of Singapore, the Graphene Research Centre (GRC) was created for the conception, characterization, theoretical modeling, and development of transformative technologies based on two-dimensional crystals, such as graphene.

In 2014, the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore has awarded NUS with a S$ 50 M grant over the next 10 years in order to support the operational costs of CA2DM’s labs and micro and nano-fabrication facility and the exploration, synthesis, and development of new devices based on two-dimensional (2D) materials of which graphene is the most famous, creating a new Centre for Advanced 2D Materials, directed by Prof. Antonio H. Castro Neto.

The new Centre for Advanced 2D Materials is now comprised of four research groups, as follows

Aiming at being a world leader in innovative and emergent materials science, with strong ties to the industry and academia, the CA2DM will directly contribute to a new generation of scientists and engineers who will have a permanent impact in the society and business enterprise landscape of Singapore, and worldwide.

History and Funding

NUS established the Graphene Research Centre in 2010, under the leadership of Prof. Antonio H. Castro Neto, with a start-up fund from NUS of S$ 40 Million, 1,000 m2 of laboratory space, and a state-of-the-art clean room facility of 800 m2. With these top-notch facilities, the GRC was immediately one of the best equipped and advanced graphene research centers in the world.

In 2011, GRC was awarded two important grants: a S$10 Million CRP grant from NRF for the growth, study, and commercialization of two-dimensional crystals beyond graphene; GC is also participating on a S$ 50 Million CREATE grant from NRF, together with UC Berkeley and NTU, for the study of new photovoltaic systems based on two-dimensional crystals.

In 2014, The National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore has awarded NUS with a S$ 50 M grant over the next 10 years in order to support the operational costs of CA2DM’s labs and micro and nano-fabrication facility and the exploration, synthesis, and development of new devices based on two-dimensional (2D) materials of which graphene is the most famous, creating a new Centre for Advanced 2D Materials which is directed by Prof. Antonio H.
