The National University of Singapore (NUS) is one of the top world universities.
In 2011 QS World University Rankings placed NUS in the 28th overall position, and number 9 and 16 in the areas of Engineering and Natural Sciences, respectively.
With respect to graphene research, NUS is ranked by Thomson Reuters' Web of Science as world number 2 in graphene research, with more than 280 peer reviewed publications as at September 2011. Combined with the similar output of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (ranked world number 5, ibid), this sets Singapore apart as a vibrant and active place for graphene research.
In 2009, NUS received nearly S$469 Million from the Ministry of Education (MOE), National Research Foundation (NRF), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and other granting agencies (see Figure).
Some major grants received recently include S$63 Million to promote research, education and commercialization of environmental and water technologies; S$17 Million to focus on research, forums and leadership programs; and S$7 Million for Sustainable Development Research, which is carried out in collaboration with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Housing Development Board (HDB), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and National Parks Board (NParks).
NUS yielded a research output of 8342 new projects and 7852 projects completed in 2010. The University signed 1781 research collaborative agreements valued at close to S$156 Million. More than 5000 papers were published in conferences and internationally refereed journals in 2010.
NUS has been awarded three Research Centre of Excellence (RCE) by NRF: Mechanobiology Institute of Singapore (2009), Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (2008), and the Centre for Quantum Technologies (2007). Each RCE was established with a funding of S$120 Million over a period of ten years.
